We are so excited about Nina; she is a beauty!  As she has grown, she has continued to develop a lovely dairy character.  We are hoping that the strong production and udder genes that come from her Springwater and Flat Rock lineages will be passed onto this young lady.  Unfortunately this first freshening coincided with COVID-19.  Although we began milk testing this 2020 with our earlier fresheners, by mid spring the peak of the outbreak and confinement affected our ability to test and the labs ability to perform testing.  As a result we decided to dry off all of our does and end any milk testing for the year.  We will pick up again next year and look forward to seeing how Nina performs as a second freshener.

By September 2018, we felt so excited about Nina, that we decided to bring her to the show ring.  In her very first showing in the class of 6-12 month olds, she placed 2nd in the line-up to a lovely 12-month old, with the judge pointing out her immaturity in her placement.  In the second show ring, she was grouped below the top three with all the other younger ones in the class and the judge said that they were all just too immature in their development in comparison to the older does in the class (and the fact she didn’t stay still to be evaluated didn’t help).  Fall 2019 we attempted to bring Nina in the show ring again.  Again she bucked and jerked, despite our continued attempts to work on lead work  with her.  You could tell the judge was frustrated with her and quit even evaluating her because of Nina’s demeanor. However, she still placed third in that show.  We really believe she would have placed higher if it wasn’t for the fact she just doesn’t enjoy the show ring.

Despite not wanting to be in the show ring, she still ranks as a lovely doe.  She does have a bit of a sharper rump angle than we would like, so we have bred her with Hawkeye in an attempt to pass of a more flattened rump angle in her kids.  During Linear Appraisal the appraiser said Hawkeye had a great rump angle, one that she rarely sees in bucks.

This Spring 2020 Nina became a first freshener and she is as lovely as ever.  We fortunately saw the rump angle improvement in her first set of kids, who are lovely.  We loved them so much, that we retained one of her does-FOB Farm H Sweet Caroline.

This first freshening, her teats are not as large as we would have preferred, however she has a socked in udder with tight medial and lateral ligaments.  Her dam’s udder and teats have enlarged with each successive breeding and and we anticipate the same.  We are looking forward to what her production numbers will be once we begin milking her next year.
