Porta Bella, “Bella” is a lovely girl with very refined facial features.  She is sweet, but don’t let it fool you, Bella is the queen of this herd!  She is a strong sturdy girl, but lovely as well.  She comes from excellent lineage.  Her grand dam was Little Tots Estate Melica and grand grand dam was PGCH Woodhaven Farms Cowgirl.  She has strong dairy lineage and we look forward to seeing the traits passed on to her progeny.

Bella has a very nice and capacious udder with well sized plumb teats.  She milks quickly on the milk stand and in good amounts.  She didn’t get on DHIA milk test in 2018 because she was open that year.  In 2019 following a successful AI kidding, we were not on milk test, but on the milk stand she did very well in her production and her udder was lovely.

Unfortunately, Bella’s last delivery was extremely traumatic!  On a weekend late afternoon (of course), Bella attempted to deliver what ended up being a Very Large single buck that was head first, but hooves back and he was stuck in the birth canal.  I was on phone with LSU, but there was no way either the kid or she would make it during the 2 hour drive to get her there.  Even with my small hands (and I have had to pull malpositioned kids before), it was an extreme struggle to get him out.  After an extraordinarily long time, we finally got his head out, only for him to stop breathing once his head was delivered.  I was finally able to be able to get one hoof out to pull on to finally deliver him completely.  Tom resuscitated him, but we weren’t sure if our little guy’s brain experienced too much hypoxia.  Mama was very torn up and required close monitoring and special care.  Our vet said that we needed to watch for uterine rupture which could take up to 24 hours to show itself and was deadly.  In all actuality, after everything she had been through, we really didn’t think she was going to make it.

But, how blessed we were!  It took a long while for her to completely recover, but Bella is back to her old self.  However, as we knew and as our vet informed us, she should not and would not be bred again.  It was a big disappointment, because Bella is lovely and a good mama.  However her health, of course, was what was most important. And the little guy…he is not so little any more!  Our Dusty, made complete recovery and has grown into a solid, handsome breeding buck.
